so far this year. the s & p 500 is also about to conclude a high september and third quarter but it is limping to the finish. right now on track for its sixth loss in seven sessions and eight down days out of the past ten. here's some more stats. nasdaq also down today but it is on pace to chalk up the biggest third quarter gain of the major averages, up about 6.5% over the past three months. i'll take that any day. let's turn it over to bob and rick on these markets. bob, i'm going to get out to you first of all. so much for d cumming, right? we did it again yesterday mir reporting when we got those results from spain. are markets smooth to off their lows? >> recapitalization about in line with expectations. i think more importantly a lot of people are straight the fourth quarter the way they wanted the third quarter, that is play the global slowdown. in theory we're seeing signs of a global slowdown but just not in the stock market so much. if you look what's happened here so far in the third quarter, u.s. indexes have done well. s&p 500 having a great month overall. these

of positive and negative in the day. s&p 500's recent pattern is one of very little movement and that could happen again. the s&p may finish the day with a move of 10th of 1% or less for a fifth time in seven sessions. clearly we have on hold for the ecb and the jobs number. meantime, the nasdaq was on track for a seventh gain in eight sessions before a leg down and with the volatile nature of the market, that could still happen. heck, anything in these marks could happen. well, as we noted, tomorrow a massive day. the european central bank meeting to make the first and latest call on interest rate this is fall and hearing from mario draghi of the status of the stability fund to protect banks and sovereign debt and while most of us fear the banks really could there be another risk here? one around the ecb itself. here's my theory. the ecb may be forced to issue euro bonds to end up paying for the bailouts. it is not out of the question. in fact, recently the spanish prime minister said they're possible. those euro bonds if floated could cut the demand for u.s. treasuries. right? if the numb

of this to me goes back to the value of the u.s. dollar and the value of the u.s. currency. ultimately i'm looking to short the euro currency here. my expectation is they need growth. the way to stimulate it is through the cheap currency. then the argument comes through ben bernanke. whether this is warranted or not, i don't know necessarily whether it is but i will say this. if you look back at the contribution of gdp from all these qes, it's more than one percentage point i get it but stephanie link, i only want to know about the contribution to the stock market. what happens if the fed does not deliver today? >> okay. so i don't think they're going to have to deliver something really big in terms of qe3 but think you're going have language from them, they probably extent twist and the interest rate. >> do you think that's enough? >> no, i don't. no, i don'tn. and i do think the market will sell off on that news. i think valuations are very attractive and whether they do something big today or next year, you have global mon tai policy being very easy. europe is off the front page. chin
